Aberdeen Harbour Project Update

Construction has now commenced on Aberdeen Harbour Board's £350 million development of additional facilities in Nigg Bay, to the south of the existing harbour. This follows six years of unprecedented public engagement by the Board and Executive Team across the widest range of stakeholders.

The pre-construction feasibility study also included a large-scale Environmental Impact Assessment, an integrated investigation into funding streams, and the creation of a Development Framework, which considered the opportunities presented by the potential investment in the new harbour for the wider Nigg, East Tullos and Altens area, and which is now being adopted as supplementary guidance to the Aberdeen City Council Local Development Plan. Three high level planning applications were also secured: a Harbour Revision Order from Transport Scotland, Marine Licenses from Marine Scotland and for Planning Permission in Principle from Aberdeen City Council.

Background

Aberdeen Harbour’s unique position at the heart of the city means that there is limited capacity to handle the new breed of larger vessels associated with a wide range of industries including decommissioning, subsea inspection, repair and maintenance, cruise travel and renewables. Such vessels have created a demand for deep water berthing which the current facilities cannot fully support.

In light of this, and with a view to opening up the potential for new business streams such as larger cruise ships and providing significant support for the renewables and decommissioning sectors, the Board has announced a development plan that would see the Port expand into Nigg Bay, to the south of the existing harbour. This project has been recognised by the Scottish Government as part of the National Planning Framework (3) as one of only 14 infrastructure projects considered as having national significance.

The development would provide an additional 1,400 metres of quay, a water depth of up to 10.5 metres, a wide entrance and turning circle, and a laydown area of more than 125,000 square metres. It would also have heavy lift capabilities, fully serviced berths, and the capability to accommodate larger vessels and future predicted traffic flows.

The location of the new facilities is also significant. Nigg Bay retains a close proximity to the city’s numerous vendors, the city fabricators, company headquarters and businesses, whilst simultaneously avoiding the traffic congestion associated with the city centre. An improved coast road would provide a link through to Altens and, subsequently, to the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route, thereby providing ease of access to the south, west and north of the city.
