HELLO AND WELCOME TO NOVEMBER'S NEWSLETTER!
This month, we’d like to offer a huge welcome to three new WQP tenants:
Oil Spill Response
Oil Spill Response
New on site this month is Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL) the largest international industry-funded cooperative which exists to respond to oil spills wherever in the world they may occur, by providing preparedness, response and intervention services.
Oil Spill Response are wholly owned by environmentally responsible oil and gas companies, and the membership represents the majority of global oil production. The business currently employs 300 people across 9 locations around the world.
In 1985 OSRL was set up as an industry resource with 17 employees and assets from British Petroleum’s Oil Spill Service Centre. In 1995, with 30 employees, the group established its mission and charter which still guides the operations today.
OSRL have had an office in Aberdeen since 2006 with the team available to its forty UKCS-based member companies to respond to oil spill incidents, participate in exercises, deliver training and otherwise assist with their preparedness and response requirements.
For more information about Oil Spill Response and its services visit https://www.oilspillresponse.com or contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Also new on site this month is international safety and security consultancy Restrata, who are relocating their Incident Management Centre to Waterloo Quay.
A range of clients across high risk industries rely on the 24/7/365 Incident Management Centre (IMC) to help establish the necessary emergency response and crisis management arrangements to allow for an effective response to any incident.
Headquartered in the UAE, Restrata’s mission is to build their clients’ resilience and optimize operations through effective management of safety and security risks. They do this by offering a range of services including risk assessments and security design, situational awareness and telematics, tracking and response, physical security consulting, HSE consulting, crisis and continuity management, workforce development and training.
Craig Menzies, UK Manager explains “The key reason for the move to Waterloo Quay was to improve the facility and thus the quality of the services we provide to our existing and future clients. The new centre features improved technology, and an observation room to support the delivery of better quality training, drilling and major simulated exercises.
“For us, the move reflects our long-term commitment to investment in support of the oil and gas sector in Aberdeen and the North Sea, along with other industries who may require specialist incident management support, training or a 24-hour Control Room function.”

Upcoming Event - Free to attend including lunch buffet
Name: Leyton Lunch & Learn on R&D Tax Credits
Location: Waterloo Quay Properties
Date: 16th November
RSVP To: email@example.com
Leyton will be putting on a free lunch and learn session on Thursday 16th November from 12.30 pm to 1.30pm, to provide further information on the financial assistance available to Waterloo Quay tenants via HMRC’s R&D Tax Relief Scheme. Whether your business is currently benefiting from the scheme or not, come along and learn the ins and outs of the scheme, the process on gaining credits for your day to day work, the common pitfalls & misconceptions and areas which are often overlooked.
R&D tax credits are a tax relief designed to encourage greater spending in product development or overcoming technical challenges, leading in turn to greater investment in innovation. They work by either reducing a company’s liability to corporation tax or by making a payment to the company.
Contrary to some misconceptions, firms don’t need to have labs full of people in white coats to qualify for R&D tax relief. Any business working on projects presenting technical challenges or uncertainties (You do not need to invent Google) or involving new product or system development, product or system enhancements, software development, internal process / manufacturing improvements, testing / prototyping or failed projects or investigative work will qualify for R&D Tax Relief.
In this context a lot more companies are eligible than you might initially think. It doesn’t even matter whether you have been paid to carry out the work.
Uptake of the R&D reached record levels in the tax year 2015/16. The total amount of R&D support claimed rose to almost £2.9bn in 2015/16, an increase of £470m (20%) from the previous year. In total, 26,255 firms claimed R&D Tax Relief in 2015/16, an increase of 19% from 2014-15.
In our experience, firms who already claim R&D Tax Relief typically undervalue their R&D activity due to lack of awareness on what technical activity HMRC allow as R&D.
By way of intro, Leyton UK are part of The Leyton Group. We are Europe’s largest R&D Tax Consultancy, that specialise in R&D Tax Relief. In the UK, over 17 years we have assisted over 7,000 clients with their submissions for R&D Relief and have a 100% approval rate with HMRC, ensuring full compliance.
We provide a niche service by having technical consultants (BEng, MEng, MSc, BSc, PhD etc) talk through client projects, so we can identify R&D activity from what their staff might feel is day to day ‘routine’ work. Our finance consultants then pull the relevant costs and indirect spend to formulate the relief or credit available (tax advisors or chartered accountants headhunted from big four)
We minimise staff time in trying to understand what HMRC are looking for, and ensure full compliance with R&D tax legislation as a member of HMRC’s advisory committee for the scheme, while educating the business throughout the process.

The Way We Were!
Last month we featured a look back at how the Waterloo Quay development used to look and what it looks like today. This month we look at Ocean Spirit House with the two images below being taken 40 years apart! The one on the left was taken in 1970 and for the car enthusiasts among you you'll notice a new Ford Escort Mk 1 which had just recently been released. The image on the right was taken in 2010. We've invested heavily in maintaining the buildings quality but as you'll notice we haven't eroded the core features of the building, maintaining the history of the development, something very important to everyone at Waterloo Quay Properties.

Who's That In The Paper??

It's a terrific article and so in case you did miss it (and shame on you if you did!) we're giving you another chance to catch this year's must read!
