After 10 years of managing marine and logistics operations overseas, November 2016 saw the return to Aberdeen of local ships agency directors Ben Sutherland and Grant Bruce with the opening of Ffolkes Offshore Limited’s Aberdeen HQ, at Waterloo Quay’s Provender House.
Ffolkes Offshore Ltd was set up in response to offshore vessel owners and operators’ demands for lower costs within the UK’s offshore ports. The business has seen considerable growth in the last three months, gaining clients on both the UK and Norwegian sides of the North Sea, and expanding to cover Peterhead and Great Yarmouth, with further expansion plans in place.
Having previously held management roles at vessel operators themselves, the Ffolkes Offshore leadership team are taking a different approach to the traditional business of ships and port agency.
Operations director, Ben Sutherland, said that the subdued market conditions had in fact made conditions more suited to the start-up of a new, independent agency provider: “Given the overall market situation, we’re seeing owners and operators making a clear move away from the larger agency group approach, and a real demand for a tailored solution that fits their specific fleet model and offers better value.
“With vessel day rates down considerably, owners are working either at or below profit margins, so they’re actively looking for ways to reduce costs in everything they do. We’ve structured Ffolkes Offshore specifically to be asset-light, capitalise on our knowledge of the local area and deliver solutions that give a real reduction on clients’ port OPEX costs.”
In choosing Provender House for their Aberdeen office, the Ffolkes Offshore team made a conscious choice to be within the port area. Co-director, Grant Bruce, who began his logistics career some 17 years ago just a few metres along the quayside in Ocean Spirit House, said: “The setup and facilities here at Provender lends very well to our business, and gives us good visibility and scope for further growth - it’s amazing to see how the area has changed over the years.”
Since moving into Provender House, Ffolkes Offshore has also secured agreement on 4000sq.ft of modern warehousing along the quayside at Atlantic House, further establishing its presence and capacity within the port.
